The story

A quiet shore beside the famous cape

Just north of Ayia Napa, Protaras offers the same dazzling water with a more relaxed, family-oriented feel. Its coastline is a string of sandy coves sheltered by low headlands, ideal for gentle swimming.

The jewel is Fig Tree Bay, regularly ranked among Europe's finest beaches: soft sand, water that shades from pale to deep turquoise, and a tiny islet you can swim out to. A solitary fig tree once gave the bay its name.

Above the resort, the whitewashed church of Profitis Ilias sits on a rocky hill reached by a long stairway, rewarding the climb with a panorama over the whole coast — a favourite spot at sunset.
