The story

Wilderness named for a Greek hero

The Akamas Peninsula, at the far northwest tip of Cyprus, is the island's largest stretch of untouched coast. Named in legend after Akamas, a son of the hero Theseus, it's a protected area of garrigue, gorges and crystal-clear bays with almost no development.

Its star is the Blue Lagoon, a sheltered cove of impossibly blue water near the fishing village of Latchi, reached by boat or by rugged 4x4 track. Inland, the Avakas Gorge cuts a dramatic ravine through the hills, while Lara Bay is one of the Mediterranean's important nesting beaches for green and loggerhead turtles.

The peninsula also holds the Baths of Aphrodite, a shaded natural pool where myth says the goddess bathed — a fitting end to the Aphrodite trail that runs along this coast.
