The story

The dawn of life in Cyprus

Choirokoitia (also spelled Khirokitia) is one of the most important prehistoric sites in the eastern Mediterranean. People lived here from around the 7th millennium BC — roughly nine thousand years ago — making it among the oldest known settlements on the island.

Its inhabitants built distinctive round houses of stone and mud-brick, clustered tightly on a hillside above a river and protected by a thick perimeter wall. Excavations revealed how this farming community lived, worked and buried its dead beneath the floors of their homes.

Recognised on the UNESCO World Heritage List, the site includes faithful reconstructions of several dwellings, so visitors can step inside and picture daily life at the very beginning of Cypriot civilisation.
