The story

A craft tradition fit for cathedrals

Pano Lefkara, in the hills between Larnaca and Limassol, is one of the most beautiful traditional villages in Cyprus — a tumble of pale stone houses, cobbled lanes and shaded courtyards on a hillside.

It is world-famous for Lefkaritika, an intricate embroidered lace whose patterns have been handed down for generations; the craft is inscribed on UNESCO's list of intangible cultural heritage. The village is equally known for its handmade filigree silver.

A favourite local legend holds that Leonardo da Vinci visited in 1481 and bought a Lefkara lace altar cloth for the Cathedral of Milan. True or not, it captures how far the village's reputation has travelled.
